LGBTQ Style Tips With Karin DeStilo (@kdestilo)

AT MNSTRM we love the LGBTQ community and strive to highlight the unique style of queer women all over the world. We reached out to our favorite fashion forward influencers to get the inside scoop on their wardrobe, styling techniques, and more.

Today we have Karin DeStilo, a LGBTQ creator who spreads positive vibes with her girl friend Skylar. Karin loves fashion and is working on her own clothing and accessory line, so definitely check her out at @kdestilo for fashion inspo. 

Who are you and what is your passion?

My name is Karin DeStilo and my passion has always been to help inspire others to not be afraid to express their true self, whether that be in fashion or through my YouTube channel with my girlfriend Skyler where we have been working very hard to spread positivity and give the LGBTQ+ community a safe place to go for advice, or even just an outlet to make their day better. My long term passion career wise has always been to start my own clothing/jewelry brand that is streetwear and unisex based. This is all in the works right now and should be ready within 2021, which I am extremely excited to showcase to everyone.

You have 60 seconds to put together an outfit. What do you wear?

60 seconds ? Oh gosh anyone that knows me or has seen any of my videos will know a 60 second outfit challenge is my worst nightmare. I change at least 5 times before leaving the house, my girlfriend doesn’t understand how it takes longer for me to get ready then her hahah. If I only had 60 seconds... I guess I would say Jordan’s, straight legged baggy denim and an oversized T or hoodie something in a neutral tone, and top it off with a nice fitted or SnapBack! I’ve been loving the 90s vibe lately mixed in with some newer trends. Accessories are a big thing for me, so I would definitely be wearing some nice chains and some shades. I don’t like to look like I’m trying to hard, just very casual but still very stylish.

What's your #1 tip for putting together a cohesive look?

I love this question, sometimes I see some outfits and I’m like WHERE ARE THE ACCESSORIES? Accessories are absolutely my favorite thing about putting together an outfit, I look at it like it’s the last piece of the puzzle, it brings the whole look together. You can step up a basic look by adding a colorful hat that matches your shoes, maybe add some pearl necklaces to give you an edgy look, or a vintage look. Accessories are versatile and I never leave the house without my hat, sunglasses, and jewelry. Definitely makes you stand out and completes your whole look!

What's your current favorite article of clothing?

Another tough question, I’m terrible with favorites haha. If I had to choose it would probably be my new Jordan 4 Retro Off white Sails which is a dream shoe for sure. I haven’t even worn them yet, out of pure fear to get them dirty haha but I think it’s time to rock them!

How does clothing fit into your every day life?

As I mentioned before I am in the works of starting up my clothing brand, so it’s constantly on my mind, new ideas, designs, piece ideas, then going all the way around to actually making clothes. Then the other half of my life is social media based, I have my own fashion YouTube channel, and my whole Instagram I take very seriously as my own fashion blog to hopefully give others inspiration. I also work with many big brands on YouTube and Instagram so I am constantly making content for specific drops or releases and going to shoots for them or doing them on my own. You could say most of my life revolves around fashion/clothing !

What's a style or trend that you just don't understand?

Honestly nothing really stands out or comes to mind, I mean the only thing I can maybe think of was when the “country” or “cowboy” style was going around, but it ended very abruptly thank goodness. That might just be because I moved as far away from my farmy home town as I could though haha.

What's a style or trend you wish you could bring back?

Fashion will always repeat itself! There are so many things we are all wearing in 2021 that my parents can’t believe have made a comeback in style. I think all my favorites have actually started coming back recently like baggy clothes, classic Jordan’s, even cropped tops, fitted hats, etc...Everything I really love from when I grew up in the 90s/early 2000’s is making a comeback now and I’m here for it.

Who do you look at for fashion inspo or advice?

I don’t normally get a lot of outfit Inspo from specific people or accounts. I don’t focus too much on what everyone else is wearing, and just dress however makes me feel the best.. Although I do pick up on and try to stay ahead of the trends, I always make sure to put my unique touch to all my fits. I obviously follow a lot of style accounts on Instagram, so sometimes I’ll see someone rocking a fit and be like ohh I really like that outfit, but I will always style it completely different and never the exact same. My inspiration comes from music artists, mostly 90s music, some modern artists too have a really unique style street style like ASAP rocky. Overall my inspiration comes from just wanting to do it differently than others and just life, and art around me rather than coming directly from specific people or profiles on social media.
